4 Keys to Unlock Your PR Pitch Potential...
Feb 10, 2025
It's easy to think, "I don't have any news a reporter would be interested in." But you’d be surprised once you start digging into your story, you'll find more gold than you expect. Think about how your product or service changes lives. What do your customers say – those heartfelt testimonials that make you feel both proud and inspired by the impact you make? Or consider your founder story – how you got started, the challenges you’ve faced, and why your mission matters.
Media outlets aren’t just looking for headlines—they’re looking for angles that resonate with their audience. Is your story educational, offering a fresh perspective? Or is it entertaining, connects others through nostalgia, emotion, or even an unforgettable triumph over adversity? I love those comeback stories! Reporters want stories that teach their audience something new, connect emotionally, or offer a unique angle.
The four key steps to PR pitch success are to start by researching the work the media outlet or specific reporter has created. Then be sure to let go of how you think the process will go and bring an open mind when you pitch. The pitch needs to be clear and succinct, as they don’t want your life story, just the nuggets of relevant gold. Focus on their audience's interests. Share something authentic, aligned with their platform, and that leaves a lasting impression. Finally, after you’ve clicked send on your pitch email, trust in the process. The media will often either reach out to you or they’ll take it from there, crafting the perfect narrative for their readers, listeners, or viewers.
Recently, in my PR Presence Program, our students were UNEARTHING their media gold for their PR pitches! Finding those gems and shaping them for the right outlet isn't a skill we’re born with, instead you can learn how to pitch and successfully collaborate with reporters. I recommend having fun being creative in your brand storytelling process. Remember, your story matters and has the power to inspire and connect others to your brand. Go ahead, unearth that gold, and enjoy the journey.
